The way I make music is a bit annoying. When I have an idea, I'll generally do a quick test recording to see how it sounds and whether it's worth working on.
The way I then build on the track is by listening to it and working out what it needs or how it should be arranged.
While I have no musical training, can't play an instrument, and can't sing in tune (ask me to sing a particular note and I couldn't) my brain "hears" things that aren't there. It's almost as though it knows what the track should sound like and is filling in the blanks.
This lets me makes additions and changes to (try to) match what's in my head. The more I listen, the more my brain fleshes things out.
There is a tipping point, however, where if I listen to something too much, it becomes "fixed" in my head, and I can't rerecord or re-imagine the track. This leaves it incomplete and I usually abandon it.
It's so frustrating.
