Wow! What an amazing four days it's been: Sal and I made a trip up to Scotland, just the two of us, to get away from our stresses and worries for a bit.
We'd had the hotel booked for a while and couldn't wait. Getting covid recently almost put it in jeopardy but, even though we still weren't 100%, we decided to go ahead with it. We're both so glad we did.
Ever since we got married, Sal has been telling me stories of childhood holidays which left a huge impression on the young her. So, part of the trip was spent visiting these places so I could see them and add some context to those stories.
Even without the specific circumstances, like a candle-lit procession or a deep blanket of snow, it was easy to see why these events had such a lasting impact. I'd never been to Scotland before, having always wanted to go for the scenery, and it delivered.
And then some.
From a house overlooking Loch Voil near Balquhidder, to imagining a snowy new year's eve in Glencoe, and a stay in the lovely town of Braemar in the Cairngorms, I was totally captivated.
More lochs and mountains, flora and fauna — including a red kite, and a trip to Dunblane Cathedral (we were disappointed with Glasgow Cathedral; it felt so cold and uninviting) made it a trip to remember.
Despite clocking up over 1100 miles (including the journey there and back) we both said it's the most relaxed we've been in ages.
