Since returning to blogging with some degree of regularity I have been slowly and carefully re-adding feeds to /reader. Slowly and carefully so as not to become overwhelmed again.

This evening I put Colin Devroe back on the list.

I've kept up with some of his recent posts thanks to links from micro.blog but not all. So, imagine my delight when I came across this post from December detailing how he had been building his own static site generator, or SSG, called Tuff. It appeals to the geek in me no end.

I've never used SSGs, always having used something that relies on a database.

Where I unapologetically took some cues from WordPress (having used and developed on it for nearly 12 years) Colin decided to go in cold and start completely from scratch. Brave man!

He's got me wondering how I would approach something like this, especially building a database-free comment system. I'm already having some ideas.

I don't think I would build a typical SSG (one that rebuilds itself) but some kind of hybrid that writes to/pulls from files to display itself on the fly.
