Bix moved his site from weblog.lol back to WordPress. As I had the old RSS feed address in /reader I just assumed he had gone dark for a while – I wouldn't blame him.
He fired me an email (in the early hours UK time) with a link to a post and I immediately realised the issue. Fixed, but I had a lot to catch up on.
In one of the recent posts he mentions his dislike for "online-style" paragraphs "with no indentations and white-space between them." like most blogs, mine included.
He also mentioned that Manu's blog used "normal paragraphs", the kind you'd see in print. I visit Manu's blog every time he writes a new post (see below) but don't think I've ever really noticed this was the case.
It never occurred to me to do these kinds of paragraphs. Maybe it's the "why replicate offline online" argument but, looking at it, it's very smart.
So I've done the same.
The first paragraph of a post is already slightly indented thanks to the comment/permalink icon – subsequent paragraphs will now also be unless following another element such as an image or blockquote.
Anyway, back to visiting other sites... (Excuse the non-sequitur.)
The reason I created the /updates view for /reader was so I would be forced to visit the source site rather than view everything within the homogeneous environment of my RSS reader, imposing its styling on every post no matter where from. That's all well and good still, Bix's case indicates that it's still not enough.
I need to implement something that tells me straight away if a feed is no longer valid when checked. That way I can investigate the site rather than assume there were no new posts.
I never used to but now firmly believe in experiencing a site as it was designed rather than in any kind of timeline, and embracing its quirks and particularities – they are their for a reason.
