Happy Friday!

Another week down and we're almost in February. While I've been trying to keep things interesting there's no denying that lockdown makes the days blend into one. The passage of time holds almost no meaning until you look back and wonder how you got here.

I finished everything for the comment avatars yesterday including the fallback image for a broken link but, as this all applies to webmentions, I started wondering about normal comments.

Most commenting systems ask for your email address and use this to perform a Gravatar check. I deliberately didn't want to worry about email addresses, there's no real need for collecting them in this way and visitors shouldn't have to supply them just to leave a comment. It does, however, leave me without an obvious route for using other avatars.

Are there other options for pulling images from people's sites based purely on a provided URL?

@colinwalker the email address helps to notify the commenter about follow up comments. I've been to web sites where all the comments were by “anonymous” because nothing was collected, not even a website URL.

@khurtwilliams Normally, yes, but I haven't built that feature and don't plan on doing so.

@colinwalker This article by Sebastian Greger helped me think through some of the issues. sebastiangreger.net/2018/05/i...

@khurtwilliams Ah yes, I remember reading that a while back. Thanks.

Well, here's a neat trick: Google and DuckDuckGo both provide a way to grab the favicon from any site and return it as a png:

If a comment does not have a picture associated with it I can set

$photo = 'https://icons.duckduckgo.com/ip2/' . parse_url($website)['host'] . '.ico';

Instant Avatar! If the site doesn't have a favicon the blog with revert to the fallback:

Huh, did not know that, writing it down for reference. Thanks!

I made a couple of tweaks to the avatar logic and think it's all as it's supposed to be.

I always start out with inline CSS as it is quicker and easier for testing so now have to move a lot of that out of the main php file and into the stylesheet. It's boring work, you just know I'm going to forget something and it's all going to look awful for a while.

I've watched the first two episodes of WandaVision and to say I'm confused would be an understatement. I've deliberately not read into anything about it but have heard a couple of things such as when it's supposed to fit in to the wider MCU.

I know there's a lot to come and that answers will be forthcoming at some point, I just can't wait for them to arrive and put me out of my misery. I have some ideas (I'm not going to say anything as I don't want to risk any spoilers) and wonder if the weirder ones might actually be closer to the truth. It seems like the kind of show that will get weird for the sake of being weird.

@colinwalker "It seems like the kind of show that will get weird for the sake of being weird" feels right on point for this, after seeing the first three episodes. I am absolutely fully on board for that, mind you. I'm not sure what that says about my tastes. :)

@chipotle I'm always down for a bit of weird 😂

@colinwalker I'm fully in board after the first two episodes ( hoping to get caught up tonight). I'm old enough to have grown up on reruns of early sitcoms (on a black and white TV!) in the style of the first couple of episodes so I loved that premise, and using that as a base to mix in some shots out of left field - I'm 100% down with that.
