A reader dropped me an email advising that the blog text couldn't be seen in Firefox on Android.

Screenshot of the blog showing invisible text

Turns out it was being caused by the CSS I'd added to fade things in and out at the top and bottom of the screen.

Firefox doesn't support animation-timeline and animation-range so was just displaying the end state of the animation which includes opacity: 0.

The effects have been gated behind a @supports check, so it shouldn't cause any more problems.

Congratulations to Manton Reece who has released his new feed reader called Inkwell.

It is part of the micro.blog ecosystem so hooks in really nicely.

You can highlight sections in articles and choose to write a post about them on your blog — similar to how /reader let's me like or reply straight on my blog.

Inkwell will also pick up replies to a post (including from Mastodon and Bluesky) if it is within micro.blog.

There is a feature that echoes what I've done recently. Inkwell is based on three tabs:

  • Today
  • Recent
  • Faded

Today is self-explanatory, Recent covers the last day or two, while Faded holds those items which are older and 'fading away' — he has obviously also taken inspiration from Terry Godier.

Just like /reader, posts disappear after a week, so it's no big deal if you don't read everything. Manton, however, has introduced something called 'Reading Recap' which uses AI to group posts by blogger and pick out topics and interesting quotes so you can quickly skim through things you might have missed.

One thing Inkwell has that I've been meaning to implement for a while is bookmarking. Especially now that items drop off after a week, being able to keep an item in /reader to come back to later is a valuable addition.
