I've been watching Tron: Ares on and off during lunch or other breaks at work and finally finished it this morning.

Warning: there are spoilers below

I'll start by saying it's certainly not the best Tron property, but it's fun, visually stunning and very watchable.

Jared Leto's Ares is an interesting character, but changes too quickly in my opinion. There are a couple of instances of "should I be doing this?" coupled with an evident internal struggle. However, almost like flicking a switch, he has fully rebelled against his directive and starts acting like a human.

I would have preferred more anguish and conflict as that is the most important part of the story arc.

The film does a good job of linking back to the past, and Jeff Bridges' brief appearance as Flynn leads to a typically irreverent conversation with Ares that is a highlight of the whole piece.

What really stands out about the film, though, is the final few minutes and how it sets things up for an obvious sequel.

After achieving "permanence" 1 Ares sets off exploring the world and says he's not alone with the feelings attached to becoming, effectively, a person. We see a picture of Quorra so Ares obviously wants to find her.

Julian Dillinger (the grandson of Ed from the first film) takes refuge in the Grid when everything crumbles around him. In a mid-credits scene we see him take an original style identity disc and turn into Sark — the original villain. Another great throwback to the first film.

If it happens (and I hope it does) I wouldn't be surprised if the fourth Tron film was actually the final one, linking all the threads together and finally bringing the story to a conclusion.

  1. being able to stay in the real world rather than derezzing after 29 minutes
