The more time I spend with Zorin OS on the MacBook Air the happier I am with it. I was originally thinking that I would need to keep the MacBook Pro as it is for a while as that's where I record using Reason. I have, however, been testing an older version of Ardour, another DAW, and it works fine, recognising my mixer as a USB input. 1

This got me wondering where I could go all in on Zorin so I started looking at the (non-Apple) apps I actually use under MacOS:

  • Spark
  • Reason
  • CotEditor
  • Forklift 2
  • Alfred
  • HandBrake
  • Gimp
  • Bitwarden
  • GitHub
  • balenaEtcher
  • Postman

I have some others installed but these are the ones I use with any real regularity – my use is relatively light and very focused. The first five are apps not available on Linux but there it's easy to make a switch to alternatives:

  • Mailspring for mail
  • Ardour
  • BlueFish as a code editor
  • FileZilla for FTP

There are a couple of options for an Alfred replacement in ULauncher and Cerebro – I've tried the latter and had some issues with extensions conflicting so will try ULauncher.

Based on this there is absolutely no reason why I couldn't switch to Linux completely and take advantage of the extra power provided by the MacBook Pro over the Air.

I'm seriously considering it and, maybe, buying the Pro version of Zorin.

  1. there's no reason it shouldn't as it's standard USB audio compliant
