Something I noticed in the government's Covid briefing yesterday was how things have been reframed, no doubt to be more inline with the approach to opening up. Specifically, the Delta variant was no longer described as a "variant of concern" on the basis that it was the dominant variant.
This variant is still fuelling the current, increasing, third wave of infections and remains significantly more transmissive than others – I'd still call that concerning. The party line, however, is that it's time to "live with Covid" so the downgrade seems to fit that narrative.
