Today sees the release of Scott Sigler's novel The Crypt: Shakedown. I just bought it on Kindle.
Why point that out?
The original podcast episodes from 2008 that introduced some of the crew featured yours truly as the pilot (Internet Archive link) probably the best pilot in the Planetary Union Navy but driven mad to the point of committing heinous crimes.
With the actual release, Sigler has changed either the first or last names of the characters but I'm still there as "Colin Draper" – pilot, Corporal.
After the episode featuring my character I submitted a backstory that explained his madness: he had been the test pilot for a type of newly discovered "jump drive". This jump, and what he saw while going through it, is what cost him his sanity.
Scott refers to a review in Analog magazine that includes:
Travel between dimensions causes hallucinations, violent behavior, and psychotic breaks for those onboard, and even with the radical measures taken aboard to mitigate the risks, there are often casualties even from brief exposure.
I'd like to think that I influenced things, even if just a little. 😆
