What a day!

About 2am my wife noticed that Harry wasn't breathing properly while taking him for a bit. He'd be laboured, breathe really fast and then stop altogether. My daughter called NHS 111 who were originally going to send an ambulance.

No ambulances were immediately available so we got a call back advising to take him to hospital ourselves. About 5am I drove my daughter, son-in-law and young Harry to hospital to get him checked.

They're all back home now and it looks like he has something called 'neonatal breathing' – sometimes seen in premature babies – almost bordering on infantile apnea. It appears he might also be struggling with expelling the last of the amniotic fluid from his lungs.

He's been given the all clear for now (irregular breathing can be common in newborns) but we've got to keep an eye on the apnea, if he stops breathing for too long we've got to rush him back in.

I don't think my wife has had any sleep; everyone else has managed a few hours but I was entering migraine territory when I got back from dropping them off at about 5:30am so didn't go to work. It's a good job it's the weekend so we can all relax and recover.

I can think of better ways to spend the day. It's good to know it's nothing that we immediately need to worry about, just observe in case it gets any worse. Other than that the doctors seem pleased with his progress.

I love the way webmentions are linked to your account on micro.blog and that it auto-adds the @mention when replying to someone.

I'm constantly impressed with how well Manton has implemented this – it makes interacting with the timeline possible from outside of the service which is all part of the plan.

A few changes:

  • added an 'ebook' link to the footer menu which takes you to /words
  • updated /about to draw more attention to the 'Start Here' and 'Words' pages
  • added a note to /colophon regarding deletion of comments due to removal of posts that sent a webmention and now return http header 410

Tinkering is a never-ending process.
