Happy Friday!

The good thing about having a day off in the middle of the week (I had to use up the last of my leave for this financial year) is that it breaks it up into two small two-day weeks. You've barely started again and it's almost the weekend already. If only every week could be like that.

I have completed the migration of the Journal out of WordPress and it all seems to be working fine. I had a strange issue whereby I could post emoji from my Mac but not my phone, it looked as though something got a bit messed up with the character set for the database table so I dropped and recreated it.

The only things left in WordPress now are the post archive and the Garden โ€“ย they are staying as it will definitely be too much work to port them. Still, never say never, eh?

@V_ Nice. Sadly I haven't got that option (and would actually like Wednesday as a second mini weekend rather than a moved part of it) but it's an interesting idea.

@colinwalker, I can understand that. I think you need to be in a pretty privileged position to be able to do something like that. And it is also not very compatible with children attending school, I think ;-) at least not when you then need to work on Saturday.

Liked: No more platforms please...

DHH perfectly expresses the problem with online life as it stands:

We have enough social media platforms, and they are all broken. Content moderation is bust at even moderate scale, and algorithmic amplification is broken at any scale. We need a reboot.

We need to double down on the ideas of Web 1.0, and the tools that make carving out your own place on the internet possible. Not more platforms luring you with that viral juice boost.

I may have been a staunch advocate for social media for a number of years but this was before it became primarily driven by money โ€“ when it was simply a joy to connect to other people around the world in meaningful discussion and a genuine exchange of ideas.

Pulling back from social, returning to the blog as my playground, refuge and identity on the web, was one of the best decisions I have ever made. Building specific relationships through common interest is the only sustainable way to carry on.

I'll leave it to DHH to summarise: "Everything from everyone all the time is too much."
