# I read with interest that WordPress 4.9 is going to protect site owners from themselves fatal errors resulting from the direct editing of files.

That's really good news!

I know I shouldn't but I edit my site live - I just can't be bothered with setting up a test environment, making changes and then copying them across.

There's been many an occasion where I've made a mistake, mistyped, forgotten a bracket or semi-colon, or simply screwed up.

Some may say it's just going to encourage bad habits (maybe so) but having WordPress refuse to save the file when a fatal error would occur is brilliant.

# Well, I’ve learnt something this morning.

While looking through the menus for the micro.blog app I saw “Emoji & Symbols ^⌘Space” and never realised that this shortcut was system wide as I tend to use the keyboard rather than menus.

Result!

# After a quick back and forth with Doug Lane I decided to reintroduce micro.blog users to the /directory but they are only shown after specifically clicking the link at the bottom of the page. That way they are not adding bulk but are there should anyone want them to aid user discovery over on micro.blog.

# We checked with the doctor's surgery and were told that my blood test was all clear but then I got a letter today from Public Health England saying that I have been diagnosed with whooping cough.

Erm, excuse me?

We double checked and it appears that the doctor wasn't sent the full results. There is obviously a process in place, however, to automatically notify PHE about certain infectious diseases.

I didn't realise that the childhood vaccinations for whooping cough can wear off after a number of years. I always thought it was a childhood disease that had been largely eradicated.

So now we know.
