I've been thinking about redoing the look of the blog, stripping things back a bit to make it cleaner. So, in my typically overengingeered fashion, I added an option on the admin page that allows me to switch between two different stylesheets. (The new theme currently only shows if logged in.)
I have removed the header/footer colour, some rounded corners, as well as the shadows and gradient on blockquotes. Things are a bit more condensed (I've made further changes since taking the screenshot below) but, due to the changes, feel more roomy.
Once I'm happy with it I'll remove the restriction on needing to be logged in to see it.
