5:30am alarm for the early shift. How quickly the mind and body forget.

I've been finding it hard to focus and get focused at this time of day. Maybe it's because I don't get enough sleep or because I don't have the commute to wake me up properly, just the trip downstairs and breakfast at the kitchen table.

I need to build some kind of new routine. Working shifts for so many years I've not had a standardised sleep pattern since I can remember. I don't think I could handle it. Still, compared to when I was commuting (before the Covid enforced working from home) I've let things slip.

There are hours that I could be using productively, hours that could tackle the feelings of "I don't have time" which pervade much of my thought.

It's time to ring the changes.

It rolls around every year, the third Monday of January (Blue Monday) is supposed to be the most depressing day on the calendar - in the Northern hemisphere at least. It is based on a formula calculating the impact of weather, time since Christmas, time since those failed new year's resolutions, and debt.

But it's nonsense and has been debunked and derided so many times but keeps reappearing.

The term (and formula) was created back in 2005 as part of an advertising campaign for a travel company. Hey! You're blue, book a holiday and cheer yourself up.

Yeah, right.

It may be complete rubbish but it can serve as a reminder to check in with ourselves, and others, to ensure that we are taking steps to improve our mental health or to just let someone know that we're there for them.

In order to get even closer to parity with the WordPress blog I've added bigfoot.js. 1 I have included a local copy of the jQuery files to save relying on a remote CDN and potentially impact load times.

Part of the reason I use Markdown Extra is because it handles footnotes (base Markdown doesn't) but I've not used them thus far. Now I can.

  1. The jQuery script used widely to make using footnotes a much better experience

I've switched from the default popup style of footnotes to the bottom-loading option due to a glitch with the popups going off screen in certain mobile browsers. Even then I've had to mess about with the CSS to ensure the footnote is centred.

I previously tested the <details> tag to see if it was a viable alternative to footnotes. It didn't play nicely with RSS readers but I still like the idea of using it. I've create a content filter to easily render the 'details-summary' code so just wanted to test it here.

This is the summary
Nothing to see here, move along please.

Whatever happens I need to style it for dark mode.
