Sonant Thoughts – Episode 47: Milestones And Mixing It Up

As I approach the 50 episode milestone I'm still enamoured by being able to record anywhere and at any time I want but it's not always as simple to come up with a topic to record about.

I wonder if it's time to mix things up in order to keep them fresh.

Ongoing thoughts about my requirements in a writing app and whether I should stick with Ulysses.

Also, why I just don't get on with nvAlt.

In line with my different approach to beta testing, this is the first year for quite a while that I have not installed an OS beta (iOS or Android) on my phone - my primary device.

Why the change? What's behind it? And how does that make me feel?

Erratum:
I mention writing about my approach to testing when it was actually an earlier microcast episode.

Sonant Thoughts – Episode 42: Discussing Comments

The discussion around blog comments (should they, shouldn't they, and how) is almost as old as blogging itself.

New platforms and technologies reignite this discussion as alternative ways of handling the conversation are explored.

That's where we now find ourselves again.

My attitude to beta testing has changed over the years and I think that now makes me a better tester.

The expectations and motivations for testing are a major factor and we just have to be grown up about it.

Sonant Thoughts – Episode 40: Quick To Judge

Testing alternative email apps between the phone and Mac made me realise just how fussy I can be about apps.

We above incredibly quick to judge faced with almost endless variation and competition. Should we slow down and take our time?

Sonant Thoughts – Episode 38: Raw

I mentioned in a previous episode about how I wanted to move in the opposite direction to those producing highly professional podcasts. Well, this is raw.

Recorded while walking complete with cars and other background noise, I talk about the flexibility granted by doing everything on mobile.

Sonant Thoughts – Episode 37: Our Unedited Voice

What is a blog? What should a blog be? Where is the line between chosen topic and personal content, and should we cross it? Are the answers to these questions purely personal or are they moulded by external influences, and what effect does this have?

Sonant Thoughts – Episode 36: The Power Of Ecosystem

There is a definite advantage to having multiple devices within the same ecosystem. The interconnection between them grants an added layer of utility each cannot provide on their own.

Rather than looking for a killer app or feature, the sum of these little connections could be the difference between using a device or not.

Sonant Thoughts – Episode 34: Forbidden Fruit

The rallying cry of the open web is that the tools are available to anyone but that often falls short.

Availability is as much a barrier to adoption as knowledge and it is easy to understand the accusations of elitism.

Sonant Thoughts – Episode 33: Choosing Your Target

Social networks change how we create. By working to the limitations they enforce we are, in turn, limiting ourselves and what we can do.

The networks should be an afterthought in our creative processes where we choose how to publish based on the content rather than the other way round.

Sonant Thoughts – Episode 32: Journalling

Writing publicly is very different to writing privately and requires a different mindset if it is to be done properly.

Journalling and blogging can crossover to a point but the former needs specific disciplines to work and to provide value.

That value, however, may not be immediately apparent.

Sonant Thoughts – Episode 31: Misunderstandings

Writing for the web can be hard. The words we use are only a fraction of our total communication so, when they are all we have, it is imperative we use the right ones.

We can be 'too close' to our ideas and opinions, knowing what we mean but not always communicating that effectively.

This leads to misunderstandings.
